Engine Out Again :(

As I previously mentioned, to fix the electrical issue, I actually think the fix is a part swap. However to do this I have had to take the engine out. while the engine was out, I did give it a quick once over, tappets etc, but all was found to be fine so at least that is good news!!! You can also see that the car is running once again on the super stiff dampers… Only however until the revalved dampers return from Penski. Its a shame that the engine has had to come out again, but its actually not so bad to do, but I do have a few things I would like to change over the winter…

The engine has been running an 8 tooth crank sensor. This doesn’t have any missing teeth so the position on the CAM sensor pulse becomes very very important. The issue being that the one of the crank pulses is almost at the same time as the CAM pulse, and the CAM pulse is from the ‘second’ cam so will wobble a bit due to any amount of chain slack! However, most engines, and indeed the latest hayabusa, run a wheel with a marker, either missing or extra teeth, as a datum point for the crank. This then allows the CAM sensor to just show phase, and as long as it is roughly correct that is all that is required. So I have bought at vast expense the latest hayabusa crank wheel. It also has many more teeth so theory at least says the crank position should be more accurate, although I dont think that matters one iota! You can see below that the wheel has two missing teeth, and I have checked with Motec that this is OK and it should be, so fingers crossed this will sort the problem.
