Now I have almost finished setting the car up. All that is left to do is the corner weights. But before I set these I thought it best to get some bump stops. I might not need them but seeing as I dont really know I thought if I had some I could experiment with them. So I had to remove the front dampers, disassemble them, slide on the bumpstop and then reassemble.
In the picture below, the red foamy thing is the bump stop. These are progressive ones, hence to conical shape, and I have gone for the softest ones. Its a bit of a guess but you have to start somewhere. Without any additional packers these bumpstops dont actually do anything, which is quite handy as it means I dont have to take the whole damper apart whilst testing. I looked around the workshop for some nylon to make the packers from but couldnt find any, so will have to order some next week. These will just spring around the shaft so can be easily added/removed. This will also allow me to adjust how low the front will go, yet more things to play with!
With the Penske dampers all you have to do to remove the eye is undo the locknut, after fully softening the damper. Then when reassembling bottom out the eye and then do the locknut back up. Some other type you have to bottom out and then undo half a turn. It just seems to vary depending on the manufacturer
Once the eye was off I was left with the picture below. The shaft is the adjuster that alters the valving.
So I just slid the bumpstop on and back on with the eye. I also cleaned them up a bit. I had sprayed a bit of WD on them when the car went to exhaust made. I had cleaned them up, but obviously some residue was still present and what with all the bodywork work they were covered in dust!
I also had another little problemette in that when the helper spring fully collapsed the spring abutment was crashing into the spring cap. This was only going to lead to problems, probably expensive, so I took the opportunity to turn doen one side.
I then put the springs back on and set the length to the correct position for rideheight. OK the corner weights still need to be done.
