I am not sure if you strictly HAVE to have a head pad, in fact I am pretty sure you dont, but I think its a pretty good idea! What I have decided to do is to start with a simple one, and if it needs modding it wont have cost anything so it wont really matter! Luckily my mother is into her craft and had some upholstery foam lying around which I managed to convince her she didnt really want anymore!
So I measured one of our holesaws and then cut a disc of foam to suit. This is actually quite stiff foam so I am hoping it will be roughly right. I then trimmed to top edge back a bit to give it some shape. Although looking at it now, it might have been better to get Mum to do it as she is much better than me, also I dont think you are supposed to cut it with a hacksaw!

I then found some plywood and cut out a wood disc, cut out a suitable strip of steel and drilled the appropriate holes.

Again, then plan is to be able to unbolt it to change things in the future. It may end up where I want a structure that wraps around me a little more, but for now this will do. The steel bracket was then tacked onto the rollbar ready to be welded on when I strip the car down for paint.
