Weight Saving

Monday, April 6th, 2009

Having estimated the weight of the car, I have decided that adding lightness is top priority! To achieve this I can either remove things, use exotic materials, or drill holes in things. Now removing things is not really doable as everything is really needed, I think. Using exotic materials, read carbon, is far too expensive, although a very good solution. That leaves me with drilling holes, its cheap, easy and pretty effective!

So the first thing that caught my attention was the pneumatic pump and accumulator plate.

‘Chopper’ Wheels

Monday, April 6th, 2009

After modifying the front axles for the chopper wheels the sensor needed to be mounted. I decided that it was OK to machine a small part of the upright away for the sensor to poke through, it was either this or extended everything further inboard but I cant see any problem with this. In this region of the upright it is very thin so I am not worried at all by machining this little away.

Clutch Slave Cylinder

Monday, April 6th, 2009

Now I meant to do this last week, but I didnt get around to it, I cant remember why, but that is no surprise, my memory is awful and unless I write it down there is only about 50% chance I will remember it!

I had previously posted that I had made two pillars for the clutch slave cylinder but was waiting for the studs to dry before attempting to assemble it. Well when I subsequently measured it all up, I had made the pillars for the standard length pushrod, but this meant the cylinder hit the dry sump pump. So after a quick redesign the pillars were shortened aswell as the pushrod and it was assembled up.

Cockpit Side Panels

Monday, April 6th, 2009

I have to admit putting this particular bit of paneling off! It just worried me as it is going to be massively on show and any mess ups would be obvious! Anyway, it had to be done, so the tried and tested method of paper templates went straight into action. Below is the drivers side front infill piece. You can see here that my first cuts of the template were not quite right and copious amounts of masking tape were used to get it just right.
