Wheel Arch Liner

I had a little time left before I had to do some other bots and bobs around the workshop. So I decided to make up the rear wheel arch liners. The name is a little bit of a smoke screen as really all they are are stone guards to protect the side pods from being destroyed! As I am making these by hand, as they are small enough for me to man-handle, the first step was to make some cardboard templates. Now exactly difficult here, but still worth doing as if you make a mistake, or bend something inside out, you can just stick a bit more on with tank tape.

Then transpose this onto the ally sheet. This is slightly thicker sheet than I am going to use on the air ducts as it needs to be able to withstand a little beating from stones and pickup and alike.

I then drilled out two big holes on the support strut to help keep the weight down , and started about bending it to shape. Which reminds me, the 108mm holesaw is totally blunt and I need to get another one. For the flanges I used this little bender, but for the curve I found the gas bottle for the welder was the perfect size after it had sprung back a little.

So, here is the finished article for the drivers side. I am planning on just gluing them on, but againĀ I may end up riveting.

I then just had enough time to knock up the passenger side one aswell. Here they are together. I spent the rest of the spare time prepping the car to go for the exhaust. That meant removing a load of bits and bobs that were only going to get ruined and raising the ride height so that it should clear any ramps in the exhaust chaps workshop. The car looks quite strange all jacked up as the wheel don’t fit the arches properly, but its safer for now.
