Wing Frame Mods

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Joe at BTB phoned me to ask if he could cut one of the bars out from the wing frame to fit the exhaust can. This didnt worry me in the slightest as I can easily put the strength back in! You can see below he has cut out the top bar between the plates and welded in half of a new  diagonal. Unfortunalty he ran out of time to make the second half but gave me some tube to make it from!

Rear Wing Prelim Mounting

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

Now that the car was back I was also able to dummy up the rear wing. This was a somewhat grand occasion as much discussion over the best way of finally mounting it. The wing has come with predrilled hole to set the main flap’s angle. However, these don’t actually fit on my wing supports, basically as the chord is too big. This leaves me with 2 main options, either making new wing support mounts with the hole predrilled or using rosejoints and a link bar to set the angle. The second has 2 major advantages, 1 its cheaper and 2 I would have an infinite amount of adjustment, however I would have an INFINATE amount of adjustment which I really am not going to need! I have gone with rosejoints for ease for the time being, but I don’t think for one moment that I will ever adjust it once its set. There hopefully will be plenty of adjustment with the second flap!

Below are some pics of how the thing looks. I really needed to push the car out to give a really nice pic, but there was just too much stuff to move, so these will have to do.

Exhaust

Sunday, February 22nd, 2009

So, a little delayed, but the car was picked up last week, and I can now show the exhaust. When I took the car down to BTB it was the weekend of all the snow, so I was a little concerned that when I got it back it might have all corroded away, however it seems that the generous coating of WD seems to have done the trick. The car only runs with a single fuel tank, as seen below, but it can easily double up and run with another behind the driver. To this end I asked if possible to leave the space behind the drivers side clear for another tank should it be required, hence the joggle around the chassis.

Wheel Arch Liner

Sunday, February 1st, 2009

I had a little time left before I had to do some other bots and bobs around the workshop. So I decided to make up the rear wheel arch liners. The name is a little bit of a smoke screen as really all they are are stone guards to protect the side pods from being destroyed! As I am making these by hand, as they are small enough for me to man-handle, the first step was to make some cardboard templates. Now exactly difficult here, but still worth doing as if you make a mistake, or bend something inside out, you can just stick a bit more on with tank tape.

Splitter Assembly

Sunday, February 1st, 2009

Shooting around the car in a slightly mad manner, it was back to the front. I gave the splitter a quick couple of coats of paint, who would have known that metal paint works on wood… Its not the best, but from experience the splitters don’t last forever and after a while the paint fades anyway, so no real worry.
