Mounting The Actuator

Monday, July 21st, 2008

After admiring the rest of the bits from GEARTRONICS I got started at mounting the actuator. There was only one really sensible mounting point for the actuator, as it need to be hard mounted to the box, as any flex may cause issue. Therefore, as the engine is hard mounted to the cradle, and there should be little flex here, I decided to mount the actuator to the cradle, as mountings for the actuator on the engine itself were few and far between. There are some obviously, but this way is far simpler. I may have to eat my hat there so, we shall see!

Firstly I had to modify the standard Hayabusa gear shift arm. This has pressed into it a link that was no good for me as it had a funny thread. Either that or mine was damaged. So i ground the back off, and then punched out the link. This allowed me then to insert a helicoil, so I could bolt the actuator to the arm. Unfortunatly I forgot to take any pics of this.

I cut out, very roughly, the below shape from an offcut of sheet steel we had lying around. Its a couple of mm thick so thats no issue and I have two so its not going anywhere!

Pneumatic Actuator

Monday, July 21st, 2008

I have received most of the bits from Neil at GEARTRONICS. He has kept back the GCU so that he can give me the very latest version of software. He is constantly updating the software, and everytime it gets better and better, and its damn good now! Its free to get him to update it we just send the GCU back, but as i am in no rush he has kept it back until i need it!

Anyway, here is a picture of the actuator. It is a standard ‘off the shlf’ item, which we will develop with until its all sorted and then look at making a final item. This way it saves making the very special final actuator until the sizes are fully known!

Splitter

Tuesday, July 1st, 2008

One of the minor changes I am doing to the car is the front splitter. I have decided to make it from wood. This has a couple of advantages over the existing steel frame cover with fibreglass. Firstly, its cheap and easy to make spares, and I know that I am going to need a couple at least, especially whilst testing. Also it allows me to add is rubbing strips that will wear away on the ground without damaging the rest of the splitter, as I am going to effectively increase the height of the main splitter, I will explain more soon!
