Well, today I did a very small amount of work on the car. As the chassis, and components, have no paint on them, apart from the suspension parts which have I believe Parker coating, I really need to get them all painted. Or at least primed. So I spent today spraying the pedal, and pedal box up black, and cleaning the chassis with thinners in preparation for etch priming.
One word of warning, DON’T use thinners in an enclosed space, take it from me the headache is NOT worth it.I have decided not to get the chassis powder coated, as is normal with kit cars, and go along the painting route. This has two benefits, obviously it keeps costs down, but mainly if there is a small fracture in the chassis, powder coating tends to cover it up as the semi-plastic coating won’t show the crack growing underneath it. Now at first I though that if I got the chassis painted it was never going to look as good, but then, we paint the Porsche and that looks FAB!
Hence the thinners. I have found, on the internet, POR 15 Metal Ready, an etch primer, which means I can spray it on and the chassis wont rust away before I can paint it. Also I can weld on any extra brackets I want and just prime those easily afterwards. Then when it all done I can pain the chassis with no worries of the dreaded rust.
Hmm, I had to stop slightly early today however as the electrician is coming tomorrow to wire in the mill, surface grinder and spark eroder and there is no way I can let him see the workshop in this mess, apart from that he cant even see the tools for the mess, engines, gearboxes, diffs, panels….. Hopefully next weekend I can get the chassis etch primed and the front splitter frame and suspension parts sprayed, then at least it will all be rust proof.
